I just realized that it's been a
month since I last wrote about the Book of Mormon. Man, if I'm gonna finish this thing, I'm gonna have to pick up the pace!
First thing I noticed with this chapter is that when Alma got the revelation concerning the spirit world, it seems that he was just asking a curious question, "
What happens to the souls of men after they die, but before they're resurrected?"
Asking honest questions which spawn from thinking critically about gospel subjects can only result in revelation. Man, it feels good to be part of a church which encourages questioning of its principles. Gotta watch out for that pride, though. As soon as you want a specific answer (or a sign) to consume it on your lusts, you're gonna get off-base real quick. Yet, asking honest questions after pondering and praying is most likely very, very pleasing to God.
Another topic which I found to be somewhat contraversial among those of my faith comes from a direct quote found in verse 8, "
...and time only is measured unto men." When I read that, it seems obvious that it's meaning what it says.
In order for God to see
both past, present, and future simultaneously, there's not much choice in the matter. The very existence of time denotes a linear "timeline", which would make it impossible for God to see past, present, and future all at once. If something like time exists for God, it's beyond my comprehension.
"
Taken home to that God who gave them life" is also a fun one. There are those who believe that a sinful soul cannot be in the presence of God. Sooo.... If that's true, why is everyone who dies taken "home to God"? There's a big difference between "be in" and "dwell with".
Man.... The sound of verse 12 sounds VERY good right now. Just gotta wear out my life in order to obtain it. Sadly, I feel I'm not even close to doing what is necessary. Thank heavens for repentance.
Then, of course, comes verses 13 and 14. Not really looking toward that as a possibility for the afterlife. Ouch.
Also - what happens to all those people who were "kinda good" or "just a little bit naughty."....? Doesn't seem to cover those people.... Paradise or spirit prison... Hmm....
Man... The Prophets must be really interested in making hell sound really, really bad. After reading verse 26, I kind of want to continue going to church, praying, reading the scriptures, etc...
Anyway... Great chapter. It's always refreshing to remember the spirit which reading the scriptures brings.
