Moroni : 1
Holy cow. I only have 10 more chapters to go, and I'll finish the goal I set 3 years ago, to read and write about each chapter in the Book of Mormon. I'm not sure why, but when I just realized that (like 1 minute ago), it was kind of surreal for me. Anyway... Here goes.
Moroni 1.
Moroni had to be one of the most truly charitable humans on earth, period. He knew what was going on, and he knew what would be going on thousands of years later.
The Lamanites were hunting each other, and probably found it truly gleeful when they found a Nephite that wouldn't deny Christ, so they could murder them. I can imagine the complete lack of the Spirit of God among them.
While they were hunting each other, and killing all Christians, Moroni was going about the business of the Lord, completely alone, and from what I read in his writing, basically waiting to die. Since he hadn't been killed, or died yet, he thought it would be a good idea to write even more "good news" to people who would read it thousands of years later - and not only that! He was writing it for the good of the Lamanites - the very people who had killed all of his family, his father, and his nation! What charity. What selflessness. What an example.
Sometimes it's hard to believe people like this really existed, and even exist today. People who would stare me in the face, as I raise my hand to kill them, after having killed their whole family, and say to me, "I forgive you, and I love you so much - I'm going to do the Lord's will and give your posterity the chance at salvation." Wow. Just - wow.
I really, really like Moroni. A lot. He's one I would like very much to meet some day after this life is through.
