It's chapters like these that get me thinking about the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ and the "end of the world". Reason is, is that this chapter happens just a few years before the 1st coming of Christ. For some reason I analyze these chapters to death, and each time I do, I find more things that seem to parallel what may (or may not) be things to watch out for in the 2nd coming.
This time, I noticed how fragile the economy must have been around this time. The rebirth of the gadianton robbers brought about the want to get rid of the judges, and reinstitute a king. They acheived the murder of the chief judge, but as a result, the people (for some reason) just didn't want to, or couldn't reinstitute government at all. I wonder what the economic state really was, among other factors, to make it so the people thought it was better to organize themselves into "tribes" instead of building a government of any kind back up. My thoughts are - it had to be have been pretty bad.
I also find it interesting, yet not surprising at all, at the mention of Satan and themselves yielding to sin, as being the thing which brought about this great destruction. Both in this chapter, and in chapter 6.
Chaos seems to be Satan's gig. Any time he can break down order, and bring about any level of chaos, he's all over it. Seems that, at this point in history, he acheived some pretty astounding success.
Verse 7 scares me, quite honestly. Causes me to yet again, realize the fragility of the hearts of men. I hope and pray that I could be found as one of the "few righteous men", should any seriously spiritual catastrophy happen, causing the overwhelming majority to turn to wickedness. That would be so, so difficult.
Wow... Reading the account of Nephi and his ministry brought on me such a powerful Spirit. I wonder what his ministry was, that it couldn't be written because it had to be written wholly, and couldn't be within the confines of the Book of Mormon. Such a polarization of righteousness and wickedness... Nephi preaching to people who were so overcome by the devil, that they got angry because of nothing other than their own inability to disbelieve Nephi's preaching. Nephi's being ministered to by angels on a daily basis. Wow. Those must have been some very difficult days.
...and it causes me to wonder - how closely the parallel will be to the days when Christ will come again...?
