Alma : 46 - Amalickiah
Haven't even started reading this yet, and I know I'm in for a doozie.  Amalickiah, in my estimation, is one of the truest Nehor-ites in existence.  Absolutely no morals, no regard for anyone but himself - even if it means killing many people who he claims to love.  One of the most dispicable humans ever to live on earth.  Now, then.  Let's get reading.

My first question is, "What in the world were the people so 'wroth' about?"  Even to the point of wanting to riot and murder their own people.  Man, Helaman must have told them something really bad, but I can't gather exactly what that was.

Ahh... Their leader was Amalickiah, so it makes sense that the mob wanted death to all for no apparent reason.

*sigh*... I wish verse 9 wasn't true, but it is.  All it takes is a guy like Amalickiah, and entire cities can be dragged down to hell as a result.  I can't imagine the torment waiting for such a person.  I also can't help but think of D&C 18:10, and if our joy will be so great in saving one soul, I can only surmise that the exact opposite is true.  For people like Amalickiah, I guess that if we turn otherwise good souls away from God, how great will be our suffering, even if we cause one soul to be lost.  Imagine how many souls were lost as a result of the preaching of Amalickiah. Ouch.

Interesting that at the same time, one of the worst people in the Book of Mormon comes to be, we are introduced to Captain Moroni, in verse 11.  What a beautiful contrast.

Interesting also that in verse 18, captain Moroni, being inspired after having prayed, would be constrained to claim that only transgressions would bring upon the Nephites their own destruction.  Very interesting indeed, in that there are prophecies of this very thing all over in the Book of Mormon.  Here's a good one with loads of references.

I wonder if Moroni did today, what he did then, if the saints would still "come running" to join him...  I certainly know a few who would, but I wonder how many would be caught on the fence.

In verse 29, we see again the astute wickedness which lived in Amalickiah.  "Moroni has more people than I do, and I know that if he gains control over us, my cause will be thwarted.  So, instead of just running away myself, I'll make sure those who are doubting our cause are solidified in wickedness by separating ourselves from our people, and leaving them for good."  Dang, he was a bad man.

Contrasting Amalickiah against Zerahemnah, we see even more clear how bad Amalickiah really was.  What did Zerahemnah do when he was confronted with an army of his foes?  He fought, and he fought hard!  What did Amalickiah do?  Ran away with a few of his buddies, while leaving the fate of his followers in the hands of their enemies.  Sound like anyone we all know?  Yeah, Satan does that too.
