Musical Nirvana in Cali
Oh....my....goodness... Yesterday was simply beautiful.....simply beautiful. I don't have NEAR enough time to write down exactly my feelings nor what happened...however - suffice it to say, yesterday was beautiful.

I got up yesterday morning and started packing up my drums almost immediately. I was supposed to be at Dane's house at 1:00pm and it was already almost noon. So, I showered, got myself smelling like a normal guy, and then started packin' them up. I couldn't wait to get to his going-away party. He's leaving for his mission on Monday afternoon and he told me he wanted me to come and bring my drum set because he was going to have other people bringing instruments and so forth. So, I was quite excited to test out my new drums with a live band.

Anyway... I packed em' up, arrived there, and the place was getting ready itself. Not too many people were there, and odds 'n' ends were being organized. Dane came out and greeted me and brought me back to where we were going to set up. The first thing my eyes laid themselves upon was a SWF 8X8 bass cab. Seeing that, I knew I was going to be in for quite a ride. For those of you who don't know what a SWF 8X8 bass cab is - it's one of the BEST bass guitar speaker setups available to the public. It probably packs around 1000 watts of power and incredible quality. Anyway... To make this novel a bit shorter due to time constraints, let me just say, it was about an hour before other people started showing up.

During this hour, Dane and I played a bit alone and then we mingled. There were quite a few cute girls showing up also... Anyway.. Some guy showed up and he came in, took a look around , made a couple of comments to Dane and then started bringing in equpiment. Amplifiers, guitars, a bass, more speakers, microphones, etc..etc...etc... I was enjoying it immensely... As I helped them get set up, I was anticipating quite a ride later on.....and indeed it turned out to be.

After preparing everything for about an hour, they decided to start playing... Brendon on lead, Dane on rhythm, Cori on bass, and Jason on drums. We played from about 2:30pm until 9:00pm. I am constantly kicking myself for not bringing some sort of recording device.

Let me tell you - music is inside my soul. I don't understand it - but... I couldn't get enough.

These musicians were so, very, passionate. We all played with our eyes shut and we got so many compliments. People were asking how long we had played together and they couldn't believe the answer when I told them "today". Wow... The type of music they play is SO much different than anything I've ever played.. The only other stuff I've played is like....grunge / heavy metal / rock / etc... These guys were playing jazz / blues / swing stuff. It was very much more technical than anything I've played before - and I don't know whether it's the higher-quality drumset, or the excellence of the musicians with whom I was playing, or the environment, or some other factor - but... I had the time of my life.

I remember playing and gazing around at the guys accompanying me - and they were all so in tune with the language we were all speaking. It was as if we knew what was going to happen in the songs we were playing - and I had never heard any of them. At one point, during a song (and all of our songs were lasting between 10 and 30 minutes) Dane got up to the mic and yelled "DRUM SOLO"... And all the guys stopped playing except on the downbeat... I tell ya - music was everywhere.. I could have died and been a happy man. The rhythms in my head were flowing like water down a stream - crystal clear, no pressure, no fear. Playing double triplets, rolls, off-beat kicks, etc.... 4 measures of heaven. It was as if my arms were a direct extension of what was going on so smoothly in my head and veins - sweet rhythms. Never have I played with such confidence, and such surety - without knowing the songs beforehand.

These musicians clicked with me in such a manner - it was as if we were all speaking a language only we knew - and none of us knew we knew it - it was just there. Pretty funky stuff. Some of the time I remember taking my thoughts and feelings and putting them in front of me - and smiling widely. Harmony, electricity, rhythm, and good, good music. I don't quite know why it was such a 'high' for me to play yesterday, but - something seriously clicked inside of me. So....

9:00pm rolled around and we were getting complaints from neighbors, so we had to disband. Brendon and Cori came up and started showering me with compliments like "You are so fun to play with...." and "You're seriously one of the best drummers I've ever played with" etc..etc..etc.. It felt really good - and my new set sounded like HEAVEN!! Wow... Anyway.. They both told me they would hunt me down and shoot me if I left them without giving them my phone number.

So... Who knows what will happen from here out, but.. Let me just say - it was an incredible day - just me, a couple of really tuned musicians, and music.

Talk about bitter-sweetness of having Dane gone for two years. But he's going to be doing what the Lord wants him to. Wow... What a day... Simply incredible.

Thank-you very much, Jason, for directing me to this entry after all these years!  (It's now May 2010).  I've been having such a bad time with depression, that I haven't played my guitar hardly at all for a long time (years).  I still pick it up every now and again, and sometimes I remember the sweet, awesome time that we had on this day.  I'm going to be moving to Colorado soon, so maybe we can get together again and begin to create some more magic (being significantly closer to Utah).  It's very inspiring to be reminded of what we all were able to create (not only that day, but days before in your warehouse/home at the time, as well).  One of the few, and best songs that I've written (The Best I Have to Give, which I, a vocalist, and a pianist played at my fairwell in Church), I could not have written without the inspiration that working there, in your warehouse/home afforded me.

I'm very, very glad that you've managed to turn your passion into a living through your new studio.  If anyone deserves to have and maintain such great joy in his work, you certainly do.

I would absolutely love to play music with you again.  You are, by far, the best drummer I've ever played with (which is really saying something), and the musician who I've clicked with, personally and musically, more than anybody else.

You might be interested in knowing that Cory Keith has begun to persue a career in music.  Brendan Van Bockern is now married, and his wife has recently had a baby.  Below are links to their Facebook pages:

I wish you the best of luck in your musical and other endeavors.  I hope that you, Sarah, and the Kids are all having wonderful lives.  Never give up your passion!

Much love,

Dane
