Sleep and Caffeine
Heh....   My wonderful 3-year-old daughter Luci loves to sleep with her parents.  Her dad doesn't sleep very much anymore, and because of this, he has to watch his caffeine consumption or he'll get addicted to it.

Heh.... Caffeine...  That brings up some interesting history.

Due to my personal beliefs and what people taught me when I was younger, I was led to believe that caffeine was bad.  Well, yeah.. It's bad, but I mean bad.... like...  you're going to hell if you drink caffeine bad.  Well....  that's a bit dramatic, but - in my young mind, I really thought it was true.  Ah, well...  Anyway.

The years passed, and I just kinda never touched caffeine.  By early adolescence I figured I wouldn't go to hell, but I also figured that doctors, teachers, prophets, etc.... probably knew something a bit more than I did about it - so I still didn't touch it.

Until about 2 years ago.

I was in the office with my wonderful friend Scott Morris, who was working with me at the time, and he asked if I had heard of the new "energy drinks" they had....  I shook my head.  He took a look at my blank stare, coupled with my hazy glazed-over eyes, and took me to the nearest convenience store.

Now... Let me tell you, about a year previous to that day, I began the wonderful trip into parenthood which also brought upon me the wonderful world of little-to-zero sleep.  While at work, I found myself falling asleep at my desk, like.... putting my head down midst my co-workers and falling asleep at my desk.... drool and all.  Yeah, that was kind of embarrassing.  The thought of caffeine didn't even enter my head.

So....  forward two years to the convenience store, as Scott and I were leaving with 4 energy drinks in hand.

When we got back to the ......

Stop... I've just gotta say  Amy Lee rocks.  I'm listening to "Imaginary" on her "Evanescence - Fallen" album, and man...  It rocks.  Seriously good tunes...  If you haven't heard her stuff yet and like rock with an edge - you'll love it.  "In my field of paper flowers.... and candy clouds of lullaby..."  I love it.

Anyway....  Back to caffeine.  We got back to the workplace (Novell), and I watched him guzzle the 16oz SoBe energy drink in one breath.  I then watched him writhe around in pain for a bit while his throat extinguished itself....  Nonetheless, I was impressed.  So...  I took a look at mine, tried to focus my sleepy-blurred eyes a bit, and figured "what the hey..." and threw back a couple of gulps.

About 1-2 minutes later, I started.... feeling....  good.....!  Holy cow.  It was as if I had just taken a 3-hour nap!  Hehe....  Yes... I know...  It's silly I figured this out after having lived for nigh unto 30 years, but....  Wow...

Anyway....  Needless to say, that afternoon went by *much* more productively than the morning had.

Now....  about 2 years after that, I find myself having to keep my intake checked so I don't get addicted.    But, that's hard when I'm averaging about 3-4 hours of good-solid sleep per night.

By the way, I'm finding that nuts and crackers and cheese are a great alternative, when the sleep deprivation isn't horrendous.

Also, I've only got like 15 more years before I can sleep again, so ..... it's not gonna last forever.  But by then, I'll probably be used to getting no sleep at all, and not know what to do with all my free time.... :)

Ain't life great?
