Okay... So this chapter wasn't brimming with the deep doctrines of the Gospel, but it did have a few nuggets.
I would absolutely love to see some sort of diagram of exactly what the Nephites did to build up their cities. I have so many ideas in my head of what it could have been, but to what extent that's true, I have no idea. It's hard for me to conceive of a fortification which could keep tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of Lamanites from entering a city, yet allowing the Nephites full access to the Lamanites, unless it was pretty big - and according to the description, this didn't contain anything much other than a whole lot of digging, and a whole lot of piling up of
dirt. It'd be very interesting indeed.
Now - another nugget I found,
which I have spoken of before, is the theme of integrity among the nations of this period of time in history. The chief captains of the Lamanites, after seeing they had no clue how to fight at Ammonihah, swore they would take down the people of Noah.
If I were them, me being a person of moderate integrity, and carrying a Temple recommend, after seeing the odds at which I was placed at Noah, would have turned around and figured out what to do - besides attacking.... But not these guys. They swore they were gonna do it, so they did it - and they lost
more than a thousand warriors because of them following their word. I'm pausing to ask myself if this was integrity to a fault.... Nah... I'd just be a bit more careful of the things I "swear by", instead of caving and not following my word.... Anyway...
I thought that was quite interesting.
Also, there's the topic of gratitude... Verse 28 lets us know the Nephites weren't slow in remembering who made their incredible victory possible.
I wonder how often I do that, when I have my little victories in life...
