Alma : 2
I find it interesting the way they referred to Nehor in verse 1:  a man "after the order of the man that slew Gideon by the sword, who was executed according to the law".  Why didn't they just say "Nehor"?  Especially seeing that writing in plates was so hard.

In verse 10, Mormon notes the intent with which Amlici gathered his army up to go against the Nephites.  I often catch myself wondering how he knew the intents of the people (this definitely isn't the only time he did it) - and then I remembered that he was a prophet.  He probably knew their intentions just as plainly as he knew their actions.

In Gospel doctrine class, we've been going through Ether, and thus talking a lot about the "What shall ye have me do" concept of receiving revelation from God - the brother of Jared basically was told, "Go and figure out how to get light into the ships yourself.", where God could have easily told him to do something specific....  Anyway...

Alma could have easily thought of asking God to give him revelation as to what the Amlicites were doing after they pitched their tents - yet he didn't.  He sent spies and relied on them for his information.  I find that both interesting and refreshing.

While reading the earlier verses about the beginning of this battle, it said that Alma was at the front of their armies.  I was hoping a verse later on would confirm that he was in the battle himself - and verse 29 does.  He was the prophet and commander, and yet he probably was one of the first to actually brandish a sword against an Amlicite.  I would be more apt to follow a leader of that caliber than any leader who sat at a desk and purported to know what was best for the war.  I know times are very different, yet, I feel that many of our temporal leaders today wouldn't actually fight even if the war was right outside their door.

Sounds like the war in this chapter was pretty epic.

Another noteworthy point is how the prophets and righteous people of the Book of Mormon always attribute their strength and success to God - yet they do everything in their power to prepare for the conflicts.  That, in my opinion, is just the way it should be.
