Gen. Conf. - Will Not Yield - Zwick
Ya know... I really liked this talk. There were points in it where I found his words coming through my mind's eye of the past.
While growing up, I was probably on the extreme of what Elder Zwick was trying to convey. Instead of being tempted to go along with the crowd, I thought the crowd was stupid, and I didn't need them. I think both ways (falling into the temptation of doing what the world does, and regarding the world as dross) are wrong.
I found myself in situations where I would make everyone around me feel uncomfortable, while I made myself a target for ridicule. I didn't care.
So.... When Elder Zwick says, "Never forget that you are a son of God. He loves you. Live by your standards. Stand up for what you believe in. Sometimes it is not easy, and you may be standing alone for awhile.", I might add, "...but don't be belligerent about it.
Everyone is going through times of trial. Simply accept people for who they are, and look for opportunities to teach them about their divine potential.
The world is a disaster, but it's filled with precious life. Distinguishing between the two, for me, is quite important. Each person here on earth is an offspring of God.
Another good quote for this talk, originally given by Neal A. Maxwell is:
The laughter of the world is merely loneliness pathetically trying to reassure itself.
