Gen. Conf. - Born Again - Christofferson
This is the first time I think I've ever watched / listened to / read a talk given by Elder D. Todd Christofferson.
My first impressions of him are very, very high. He has a very poignant, straightforward, yet very soft tone to his voice. He does not waver in his speech, and seems completely convicted of the things he says.
I enjoyed this talk greatly.
Some of my favorite quotes of this talk:
"...
let us not justify ourselves in a casual effort. Let us not be content to retain some disposition to do evil. Let us worthily partake of the sacrament each week and continue to draw upon the Holy Spirit to root out the last vestiges of impurity within us. I testify that as you continue in the path of spiritual rebirth, the atoning grace of Jesus Christ will take away your sins and the stain of those sins in you, temptations will lose their appeal, and through Christ you will become holy, as He and our Father are holy."
I think one of my main problems with overcoming sin is contained within those words. I like retaining some disposition to do evil. Being very honest with myself, this is true. I need to
really want to become spiritually reborn and cast off even the most simple and seemingly inconsequential temptations.
I need to really want to become a true disciple of Jesus Christ - all the time - in every way.
Until I do this, I will stay as I am now: Not too bad, cruising along in life, only giving 3/4 of what I know I can give to my savior, Jesus Christ.
And quite honestly, I know that isn't enough.
Another quote:
"
You should remember that the remarkable examples of King Benjamin’s people, Alma, and some others in scripture are just that—remarkable and not typical. For most of us, the changes are more gradual and occur over time. Being born again, unlike our physical birth, is more a process than an event. And engaging in that process is the central purpose of mortality."
Note the use of the word "engage". I believe he chose that word for a purpose. Engaging in righteousness is just that - engaging. It isn't floating along, it isn't letting life go by, it is seeking out, it is active (not passive), and sometimes it's hard.
I enjoyed this talk greatly.
