I'm kind of distracted now due to external crud, but one of the verses jumped out at me. Verses 7 and 8...
I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the Spanish conquest, as it came to the Americas. I have combating feelings toward the whole history of what happened.
- The "Indians" found here in America were the posterity of the people who killed the Nephites. I loved Mormon and the few righteous who were still living at the time the Lamanites completely destroyed the Nephites, so, scripturally, it's kind of hard to not feel like "they had it coming", but as that may be, I am definitely not one to judge.
- It seems like the American Indians were a semi-good people when the spanish people found them. Such harsh treatment human against human is rarely justified, and thus, I feel badly for them.
The 2nd half of verse 8 is, of course, the redemption. The "great and marvelous work" which was to be done to bring back the seed of Lehi, as well as the entire human race (those accepting) back to their God.
It's kind of mind-boggling to think that this very thing is happening right now, this day, this minute. What a blessed time.
Response to verse 14: I sincerely hope I'm on the right side of the line when that happens. It definitely won't be too good of times for the wicked.
I find it very interesting that verse 18 has no footnotes. The verse is very much like it's talking about the coming of Christ, but if it is, why is it not linked to 3rd Nephi, or the Bible? What is that verse talking about?
Also, verse 18 says "these things must shortly come", while at the time of writing, it would be a little less than 600 years before the coming of Christ... Hmm.... Not sure about that one.
In verse 26, I believe Nephi is talking about the Millennium. If that's so, then there's got to be some explanation for verse 18. In verse 21, Nephi speaks of Christ, so it's not too far off to say that verse 18 is talking about the coming of Christ. If so, how in the world can that be considered something to "shortly come".... in 590 years?!
Well... Alma 40:8 tells us that "time only is measured unto men", which tells me, albeit quite vaguely, that for God, there is no time. If that's the case, then the closer we get to the spirit, the more we see at once. I suppose that's why Nephi could see the entire history of earth in the timeframe he did (as well as all the other prophets who saw the same)... So... To a prophet under heavy influence of the Spirit could very well be quite justified in saying that something to come in 600 years is said as something to "shortly come".
I don't know. I'm just thinking out loud.
One last note:
Verse 26 makes it quite clear (clearer than any other scripture I know) how Satan will be bound during the Millennium -
because of the righteousness of his people - meaning the people of God. I love that scripture.
