1st Nephi : 18 - Nephi's Faith
I don't think that ever you will find any words of righteousness associated with Laman and Lemuel, not once, but twice, within 4 verses more than in this chapter alone.
Not sure why that stood out at me this time, but once in verse 1 and again in verse 4, Nephi said that Laman and Lemuel were on good behavior. I thought I'd take time to suck in this moment, for I'm fairly sure it's the first, and last time it'll happen.
I'm not sure why I'm writing this paragraph, but I noticed that Laman and Lemuel didn't really start murmuring or complaining the time they began being wicked on the ship. They just started being rude and frivilous. I'm 100% sure Nephi had good reason to talk to them, simply due to Laman and Lemuel's history of wickedness. I'm sure the frivilousness and rudeness would have quickly escalated regardless.
But, anyway... One thing worth noting is the compass didn't stop working until they had tied Nephi up. Interesting...
I sit here boggling (sorry for the scattered nature of this post, but it is past midnight) about how Nephi could possibly have the faith he did. He probably was younger than I am now, and his brothers just would not "get it". He somehow had the faith to realize that God was never the point of blame for his afflictions. Verse 15 and 16 amaze me.
They amaze me because Nephi apparently wasn't scared about what the ocean was doing to them. He was tied up 4 days on a ship which pretty much was being tossed around by the ocean at will. Yet, when he was loosed, he "praised [God] all the day long". Simply amazing. 4 hours being tied up is long, let alone 4 days.
...and they arrived at the promised land.
