Do Mormons Worship Christ?
To start things off, I’ve been doing a bit of research on Christianity due to a friend I have at my place of employment. In my research I came upon the wonderful debate on whether or not members of the LDS church are “Christians”. The arguments pointed out were surprisingly well-worded and easy to understand. One of the main ones being “Mormons don’t worship Christ, so how can they be considered Christians?”

I took this point to heart and wondered within myself, “Do we (Mormons) worship Christ?” The points of doctrine I found caused a bit of ambiguity. Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

To study this accurately, we must understand what “worship” means. Put simply, from what I gathered (and I’m nothing but an unpaid musician who happens to develop web applications full-time), worshipping something seems to mean “to reverently honor, love, and pay homage”. I can live with that.

So, to “worship” Christ simply means to love, pay homage to, and reverently honor Christ. Yup, I can live with that. I’d even go so far as to say that we LDS folk explicitly worship Christ under that definition. We pay homage to him in word, and in deed, through weekly service given at an altar we build specifically to pay homage, and reverently honor Him by partaking of a sacrament representing his body and blood, and we do it in His name.

We also honor him by honestly striving to emulate his life through our own. This is done by keeping His commandments, e.g. serving our fellow man, praying to the Father, living as sin-free as we possibly can - just to name a very few examples.

The more I write, the less ambiguous the doctrine becomes. Most of the references given in scripture state we should “worship God in the name of Jesus” ( D&C 18:40; D&C 20:29)

But there is one which is quite blatant in stating we should worship Jesus Christ. That would be found in 2 Ne. 25:29 which states we need to “bow down before him and worship him” with all our might, mind, and strength.

That’s good enough for me.

I think the rest of the debate upon this subject might come from abiguity in defining exactly what the word “worship” means.

Yup. In my simple mind, with my simple rationale, and a bit of logic, I think I do worship Christ.

Anyone disagree?
