Today at work, I happened to stumble upon a blog which I've never read, or heard of. This is a shame because this blog happens to belong to a person who is very important in my life. A person I've never spoken to, met, seen, or otherwise had any contact with at all.
His name is
Daniel Robbins (drobbins).
Daniel Robbins created
gentoo Linux. Ya know
Larry the Cow? No? Oh... well... That's okay. He's a pretty cool cow. Anyway...
I've been using gentoo now for .... sheesh... going on 4 or 5 years now. I use it on my production servers at work, on *all* of my machines at home (all 5 of em')..... Ah heck... Here's a listing of how I use gentoo Linux:
- My mythbox at home, serving up all my home-theater goodness.
- My web server
- My file server
- My print server
- My work station
- My digital audio workstation (DAW)
- My email server
- My wife's workstation which she uses on a daily basis
- My game server at my LAN parties (UT2004 and ET)
- My own personal workstation
- My own personal laptop
- My web development box
- Nature's Way's development box
- Nature's Way's production box serving 3 websites now, with more coming soon.
- My work-issued laptop
- My work workstation (dual-monitor)
- My brother's workstation
- My brother's laptop
And that's about it. Not all of those are separate computers, which - to me - is a large part of the beauty of gentoo Linux.
My myth, file, email, web, nfs, and gaming server are all the same box, and it's not a beefy box, either. It's just an AMD 3000+ single-core with a Gig of memory and it's on 24/7. It's been on for about 3 months now without being rebooted. The last time I rebooted, it was only because I upgraded the kernel.
Anyway..... Suffice it be said that I love gentoo. and I love how it works around me. It aims to be as customizable as I can make it, and man alive....
Thank heavens there's a distro wanting to fill that void. No other distro can do it.
Now, about Daniel Robbins. His blog states that gentoo is havin' troubles, and that made me sad. :-(
I hope it doesn't go away, and I don't think it will... Because it seems that drobbins is still in the game and helping it progress.
I kind of wonder how I can help more. I'm tempted to become a gentoo developer and start contributing ebuilds 'n' junk because, hey, I've been using gentoo now for years... free-loading it like I was a pirate or something. I think I do need to look into becoming a developer more seriously. Even if I can help just a bit....
...a bit is still more than nothing at all.
